Learner's Digest (LDI), based in Glendale, California, partners with medical societies and institutions to record and publish the content from their national and international medical meetings, turning this content into continuing medical education for health care professionals, primarily those in clinical practice. Proofreader reads all ADF written summaries and revise as necessary. Review all text for each lecture ensuring adherence to ADF and AMA style guidelines. Review and revise lecture titles, credentials, affiliation, pub date, vol/issue. Compare written Faculty Disclosure to speakers' permission form. Check CME questions/answers to ensure accuracy, logic, and spelling. Proof read final PDF print document to ensure all revisions were made. Check for grammatical errors.
Performs proofreading of CD labels sleeves for ADF's subscriptions products. Review and revise as necessary speaker names, credentials, and location affiliations by comparing against speaker permission form, affiliation website, writer's preparation doc, and audio introduction script. Check program and lecture titles for correct word usage/terminology using internet search and reference materials ensuring adherence to ADF style.
Edit ADF lectures for website before publishing to ensure lectures, speaker titles and credentials match; edit and revise as needed.
After training, the Proofreaderperforms substantive editing, copy editing, and proofreading processes or ADF's Board Review writing, with specific attention to the structure, organization, and concepts central to the appropriate style guides and clinical standards. Performs substantive editing of written lecture summaries by listening to and correctly interpreting spoken language of lecturers with diverse speech patterns and regional accents. Eliminates wordiness, triteness, and jargon, and ensures smooth transitions, an appropriate pace, a uniform tone, and a clear focus. Ensures use of language that eliminates any appearance of bias toward specific products. Contributes to the accuracy of the audio portion of ADF programs by flagging incorrect or misspoken information. Back up to Associate Content Editors as needed (vacations, sick, etc).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure accuracy and consistency of terminology.
Rephrase sentences to ensure conciseness, clarity, smooth transition, and within-paragraph flow.
Check formatting to ensure style tags are correctly applied from document template.
Review and revise program title, lecture title, speaker name and credentials, speaker affiliations, publication date and volume/issue, (as needed) for ADF CD sleeve and label.
Review and revise (as needed) final written PDF of ADF's written summaries including program title, lecture title, speaker name and credentials, speaker affiliations, publication date and volume/issue.
After completion of training, perform substantive editing on ADF Board Review products to ensure that written summaries accurately reflect the intent of orally delivered lectures.
- Back up print production manager on website editing, submitting programs to printer, and making revisions directly to Indesign layout.
Education: Bachelor's degree (or higher) with emphasis on biologic sciences, medicine, English and/or Journalism, or equivalent experience.
1 year of experience in Biomedical sciences, medicine, English and/or Journalism, or equivalent including:
Knowledge of medical terminology
Working knowledge of MS Office
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:
Experience using InDesign a plus
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract concrete variables
Ability to perform medical literature searches and interpret and summarize data from clinical trials
Must be able to work within publication deadlines
Travel Requirements: minimal, possibly up to5%
